Women In Fortnight x Meghan

1. Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Meghan Yuri Young (@meghanyuriyoung). Yuri is my Korean name! My other half is Sri Lankan. My pronouns are she/her and sometimes I feel like I do a little bit of everything when it comes to storytelling.

I've been in the media industry for 15 years, first as a writer, then blogger and burgeoning content creator, all while pitching and producing large-scale projects to brands such as Indigo and Nike. Around the same time, about seven years ago, my personal life was going through some major changes and as a result, I launched The Sad Collective, a community aimed at creating a safer, braver space for awareness, conversation and advocacy for our mental health.

These two passions have since merged time again in almost everything I do, whether it's writing, production, speaking, hosting and more.

2. What does feeling beautiful mean to you?

The first word that comes to mind is "confidence". But, when I sit with this question a little longer and put ego — which isn't a bad thing! — aside, I think feeling beautiful, to me, is being vulnerable. Maybe it's confidence in vulnerability. I know the days I don't feel the most beautiful are the days I need to feel the most beautiful. So feeling beautiful is less about what beauty looks like and all about what it feels like. And it often comes back to that feeling of gratitude for what this beautiful body can do. Being open and vulnerable enough to be accepting and grateful is what feeling beautiful means to me.

3. What do you like to wear closest to your skin?

What a great question! When I think about it, my instinct is to mention the softest materials like silks and cashmere, but if I'm completely honest, I'm pretty simple, even when I'm out and about. So I think what I like to wear closest to my skin are cozy cottons. That said, I also think about how much the saying "wearing your heart on your sleeve" resonates with me. Metaphorically, it would be that as well.

 4. What do you wear to feel most like yourself?

Something simple and timeless is always my go-to. I love fashion and I do think that love shows more often than not. I tend to be really easy-going when it comes to what I wear because I don't like spending too much time getting ready. I love texture, I love layering and I love versatility. I also love black hahaha. And accessories... I think that's how I play up my outfits when I want to look and feel a little more special.

5. When do you feel most confident?

This becomes a tougher question to answer (in a good way!) the older I get because I genuinely feel like with every birthday, I’m more comfortable in my skin and that ends up making me feel confident in so many different situations. But if I had to pick a moment I feel the most confident, it’s probably after a solid workout. It doesn’t matter how hard I pushed, how good I look and, especially, what people think... after a solid workout I usually feel strong and self-satisfied... all for me.

6. What makes a place feel like home?

My little family including my puppies, for sure. Also books... a lot of books, and my continually growing collection of art from local artists.

7. Are there any self-care rituals that are important to you?

Honestly, I have so many because it’s about having a box full of tools to get you through whatever you need help with getting through. The ones that I find myself constantly exercising, however, are boundaries and compassion. In my opinion, the act of compassion is a self-care ritual because it takes work being kind not only to others but to yourself as well.

Boundaries are pretty self-explanatory... but to me, they go beyond “yes” and “no”. Sometimes it’s about needing rest and recovery, as well as better focus and fewer distractions. But sometimes it means putting yourself out there in intentional ways. I’m an extroverted introvert, so it’s always been important to me to take time for myself (often a lot), but then getting back out there because my community means so much to me.

8. How does wearing Fortnight make you feel?

Those who really know me know that I don’t often think too much about what I’m wearing under my clothes 🙈. So when I wear Fortnight, I feel like a full-grown woman.
